PATHWAYS FOR SUCCESS

Every student eventually goes to work. Fifty percent of our students will go directly into the workforce after leaving high school. It is an honourable pathway and we must help prepare students with appropriate essential and employability skills for the workplace.

Elliot lake Secondary School is ahead of other schools in the province, offering a wide range of experiential learning components.

Our vigorous school-work transition programs include:

* guest speakers from vital employment areas;

* job shadowing for all Grade 10 students;

* short term work experience tied to specific workplace courses;

* the traditional full semester co-operative education program;

* PLUS we have a half day co-op program.

This school-work transition program pathway offers both in-school and work-based experiences.  In the morning, students complete compulsory credits in English and Math, required to complete their OSSD (Ontario Secondary School Diploma) requirements. In addition, other targeted courses will be offered to give students the necessary information and skills to prepare them for the world of work.

Our Pathways for Success program uses authentic documents and resources from the workplace that introduce and develop the learning, employability, technical and life skills necessary for students to make seamless transitions from school to work.

In the afternoon, students will be placed at a worksite in a field of their own choosing. This program will allow students to explore entry-level jobs in key employment sectors, acquire specific on the job training, as well as make important connections with employers. At the end of the semester each student will have the opportunity to receive a performance review by a professional in the selected field.

Student Pathways for Success offers many benefits to students. It focuses on improved student learning with a group that has traditionally fallen through the cracks. Other benefits include helping students identify the workplace as a successful career pathway, building self-esteem and forging community connections.
