Co-op Education
What Every Parent Needs To Know
As a parent, you are probably aware of the difficulty young people face in choosing a career that suits their particular interests and abilities but also has the potential of meaningful employment. With the rising cost of post-secondary education, you want to give your child the edge in deciding which way to turn. Co-op education might give your child just the advantage you are looking for. Whatever their decision, the experience and contacts gained through a co-op education placement can only help. Your child needs your support and encouragement to make the difficult decisions about education and career.
What is Co-o p Education and How Can I Help?
As the term implies, Co-op education is a program which combines classroom learning (theory) with real workplace learning (experience). It's the best of both worlds. through structured partnerships involving parents, students, teachers, employers, trade unions and school boards, hundreds of Co-op opportunities are made available to students in Elliot Lake every year. Co-op experiences help students try occupations on for size as well as make contacts for future reference on resumes and in interviews. You can help by encouraging your child to find out more about Co-op education at school. Talk to them about their career goals and the ways they can determine what knowledge, skills and experience they will need to be successful in life. Most of all, be supportive of their decision to try something new.
Are There Any Disadvantages? What About Costs?
Co-op education is simply a different way - a more realistic way to learn. Any subject can be learned by practical, hands-on instruction. Experience is the best teacher. There should be no additional cost or time required to participate in a Co-op placement. Your child's Co-op teacher will make all the arrangements. Your role is to be supportive of your child to explore the Co-op alternative and to ask questions about their learning once they begin a placement. In this way, you become an active participant - a partner in your child's education.
