The Co-op Construction Building Course
![]()
ELSS will once again offer a unique Co-op Construction Building Course this fall. This course component will be based at the school and run out of one of our Construction Technology labs. This differs from our regular Co-op program where the student is placed at a local business and is supervised and trained at that location. This program will run as a combination of asmall construction business and also a training centre.
On the business end of the course, the students will gain valuable and practical skills in consulting with clients, drawing plans, and then having them approved by the building inspector. The students will also be responsible for getting the required permits, estimating material costs and ultimately constructing and installing the projects. These projects will range from small items such as docks, decks, or doghouses to fairly large and complex ones such as sheds, saunas, gazebos, and garages.
In the training centre component of the course, the students will practice construction skills used by other sub-trades involved in residential construction (plumbing and electrical work); this training will provide a better understanding of how these trades require certain framing practices.
The students chosen for this program must be self-motivated, mature and willing to work outside of school hours as certain projects dictate. Allowances will be made for jobs and extra-curricular activities. In return, the students will have ample opportunity to gain invaluable theoretical and hands-on experience in a controlled environment. They will be introduced to and extensively trained on specific air tools which although useful, are potentially dangerous tools - prior to using them in their field of work.
The specific projects that the individual students will work on will be delegated from specific proposals submitted from the community, depending on the suitability and skill level that the student has acquired and is capable of completing with an acceptable level of expertise.
