      KEEP IN MIND THAT:

......... (1) THE OPP will be invited to bring their "drug dogs" into ELSS to ensure there are no drugs on the premises. If there is a suspicion that a locker contains prohibited items, it will be opened and searched. Consequences will apply if a prohibited substance or weapon is found. It is important that students maintain the lockers assigned to them, and no others, as they will be responsible for items found in those lockers. These practices are intended to help keep our school safe for everyone. If warranted, cars on the property will also be searched.

. ....... (2)  ALL STUDENTS, before entering a school dance, will be required to blow into a breathalizer. If alcohol use is identified, parents/police will be contacted. If you possess and/or consume and/or if you are suspected of being under the influence of alcoholic beverages, or illicit drugs on school property or while on school­sponsored events, you will be suspended and/or expelled.

SCHOOL & PERSONAL PROPERTY ISSUES

       LOCKS AND LOCKERS

-  Lockers are the property of the school, on loan to students. Do not store valuable items or cash in lockers. While theft is not a common occurrence, it is upsetting to lose items in this fashion. Do not share lockers or locker combinations with other students; sometimes t!tis in/ormation call be passed on to strangers. Lockers may not be exchanged.

Leave backpacks, purses, coats and toques in your locker. They are not allowed inside the classroom

              VALUABLES

............. Students are reminded not to bring large sums of money or valuables to school. During Phys. Ed class, items such as watches and jewelry should be locked in your locker and not left in pockets in the change room. Students are responsible for the care and safety of all their personal belongings. The school cannot accept responsibility for lost or stolen articles. However, any suspected theft should be reported to the appropriate teacher or the Vice Principal immediately.

          MAINTAINING SCHOOL PROPERTY

......... You are expected to use all parts of your school, including equipment, facilities and supplies with the same care and consideration as you would your own valuable personal possessions. Be considerate of our neighbours: no littering or congregating on adjacent property. Students who vandalize will be expected to pay for repair or replacement of such and suspensions may also be issued. Intentional damage may involve the police. In taking care of school property you display pride in your school. Money saved in repair costs can be reallocated to better serve your curriculum needs.

STUDENT PARKING

All students must park along the south end of the Tech area on the gravelled area of the parking lot. There is no parking in the Cafeteria circle or in the Reserved Staff and Visitor Parking Areas. Student vehicles parked in the restricted areas will be towed away at student expense.

TEXTBOOKS, LOCKERS & VEHICLES

Books and lockers are loaned to you but they remain the property of the school. The school owns the lockers, the students own the locks. Lockers can be opened and searched by Admin when needed. A reminder that vehicles on the school property can also be searched by Admin to ensure student safety. The official school lock will be on your locker when you start school. No other locks may be used and will be removed if found on lockers. If your lock is still in good condition when you graduate or transfer from the school, we will refund you the amount of$5.00. Students are responsible for the care and upkeep of their lockers. Lockers must not be defaced or damaged in any way. Text­books are issued to each student at the beginning of each semester. Each text issued to a student carries a number re­corded on a student's textbook tile. In the event of loss or damage, you will be asked to pay accordingly and additional texts will not be issued until payment has been received. DO NOT loan your textbooks to others. At the end of the semester all students must return their textbooks before being able to write final exams.



COMPUTER PRIVILEGES

  -    All students will be given a computer password to log onto the ADSB class computers. A computer use agreement will be sent home outlining policies. Inappropriate use, (as outlined) may result in loss of student computer privileges tor the school year.
There is 'zero tolerance' (suspensionl expulsion) for any student found to be accessing gambling or pornography sites or using the internet to
promote racism or cyber-bullying against another student or staff member.

INTERRUPTIONS :   Pay Phones, Cell Phones and Pagers

        Two pay phones are provided for the convenience of students. They are located outside of the Main Office. Please note that all Local Calls are now 50 cents. Office phones are business phones, needed for the operation of the school and are not to be used by the students except briefly for urgent communication. Only in case of serious need will the office assume responsibility of accepting messages for students from outside callers. No cell phones, pagers, or other communication devices are permitted in the school.

              SECURITY & SAFETY ISSUES:

              (1)  VISITORS

...........  All visitors must report to the Main Office immediately and obtain a visitor's pass. No visitors are allowed in the school during class time unless they have previous permission from Administration - 24 hour notice is required. If you see someone you recognize as an outsider in the school, please direct them to the Office and report it to a teacher as well. We need your help in maintaining a safe environment.

             (2) INSURANCE

. . ....... Student Insurance is available in September to all students on a voluntary basis. We strongly recommend that students take this insurance if your family does not have adequate coverage and you are planning to participate in co-curricular activities.


In Accordance with the SAFE SCHOOL ACT:

WASHROOM USE: To protect students, as part of our Safe School Act, washroom use during class time is by OFFICE PERMISSION ONLY.

LUNCH BREAK:

Due to the Safe School Act, students are not allowed to sit in the hallways or congregate. They are encouraged to walk the halls or access the Cafeteria, Library, Games Room, or Gym
(to participate in the extra-curricular activities available).











SKATEBOARDS are not to be used on school property.Please use hacky sacks, rollerblades and bicycles OUTSIDE the building only.
Failure to abide by the rules will result in confiscation of the item.

Failure to obey a staff member will result in referral to administration and possible suspension. You can also expect courtesy from staff members.

REMINDERS:    Holding hands is the only acceptable form of showing affection.

Students must use the 8 minutes between periods for washroom use.

Food & Beverages: No food or drink is allowed to be consumed in the hallways.

      The cafeteria is the only acceptable place for eating food.

Only bottled water is allowed with permission of the teacher in the classroom.

NO CARD PLAYING from 8:35 a.m. - 11:25 a.m. and from 12:25 p.m. - 3:03 p.m.

INTEGRITY ISSUES:

While students may work together on assignments or homework, they are expected to hand in their own work tor grading. Material "'lifted" from the Internet, or copied from other sources is not acceptable. All sources and intellectual ideas that arc not your own must be properly cited. Violations will result in a meeting between the student, parent (guardian), Guidance Head and Vice Principal to discuss the consequences. Integrity issues will remain in the student file and could ultimately affect bursary and scholarship chances upon Graduation.

. . . I need to leave?

Sign out at the Office (with permission).

. .. I've been away?

Bring your note to your first period class in the morning.
If it is after 8:35 a.m., you will bring your note to the Office and sign in. Arrange to catch up on all missed work.

. . . I need to use the washroom during class time?

The 8 minutes between classes should be used for wash­room breaks.
If it is an emergency situation, please ask your teacher for a note (timed) and then report immediately to the Vice Principal's Office. The note will then be signed with the time of return and then given to your teacher. (Safe School Act)
...... I am sent out of class?

Report to the Office and request a conduct report.
The Vice-Principal may send you to:

a) Room 209       b) back to class        or         c) home.

You must resolve with the teacher after school that day in order to return to class. Failure to resolve will prevent you returning to class and may incur further consequences.

. .. I need to change a course?

Go to the Guidance Office, between periods or at lunch to make an appointment.

..... I am having difficulty with my courses ?
Where can I get extra assistance ?

You can get exta help after school:
a)  from your subject teacher
b) in Club 210

REMEMBER THAT .........

Those students found to be involved in harassing or bullying other students will be subject to severe disciplinary action (suspension and/or expulsion).

Physical violence is disruptive, prolonging problems rather than solving them, and is not tolerated by the School. Any kind of harassment which targets any personal attribute is also unacceptable.

CONSEQUENCES for any infraction of the rules a student may typically receive one or more of:

Counselling

A warning

An essay assignment          

A class detention

Attendance and Expectations

LATES

You are expected to attend school regularly and to attend all your classes when you are here. You are expected to arrive at school and at class on time, and to remain in class for the full period. School begins daily at 8:35 a.m. Students arriving late must sign in at the attendance office. The accumulation of 5 lates in one semester will require the student to serve an assigned after-school detention. Failure to serve the appointed detention will result in a I day out-of-school suspension, followed by another assigned detention.

SIGNING OUT

An explanatory note is necessary. Bring your note to the attendance secretary when you sign out. If you do not have a note, a call to your parent or guardian will be necessary in order for you to leave. Please note that even if you are 18 years of age, you will still require permission and documentation.

MISSED WORK

If you've been away and missed some work in one or more classes, you are responsible for tinding out what work was done and getting caught up. Missed work and tests will nonnally receive a zero until you do get caught up. See teachers if possible before you will be absent to make arrangements.

ASSIGNMENT DEADLINES

You are expected to submit assignments on or before the due date. Your tinal grade will be affected if you fail to meet expectations. Speak with your teacher ahead of time, if you have veritied special circumstances and can't make a due date.

SUMMATIVE ASSIGNMENTS

Projects, essays, unit tests, and tinal examinations contribute signiticantly to your tinal mark in a course. If you miss one of these assessments, you risk losing credit in the course. If you must be absent from a summative assessment, you must have your parent/guardian call in to speak to the teacher. A note from your physician may also have to be produced upon return.

EXAMINATION POLICY

Please note exam dates. Avoid making vacation plans or other commitments during the moratorium or examination period. This includes job commitments or the booking of travel. You must write your examinations at the specitied time and can be excused only for compassionate or medical reasons verified by a doctor's note.
